Understand Philanthropy

Philanthropy means giving to promote the common good.  It can be the giving of time, money, or knowledge -- as long as it improves the quality of life for society.

People and groups give in many ways.  Some examples include:

  • Family foundations funding innovative solutions such as the 911 emergency response system.
  • Community foundations supporting nonprofit organizations that serve local racial, ethnic, and tribal communities.
  • Individuals practicing their faith through making donations and volunteering for charitable organizations.
  • Members of giving circles pooling resources together to generate greater impact for their cause.
  • Regional associations serving as leaders for grantmaking in their metropolitan area, state, or a multi-state region.

Anyone can participate in philanthropy. Everyone benefits from its work.
