Grantmaker Education

Regional associations have responded to the influx of new foundation staff and trustees into the field by offering a variety of educational seminars and workshops to orient and educate grantmakers.  The Forum is now poised to build on this experience and take continuing professional education for grantmakers to a new level.  Our educational initiatives will generate a series of standard, high quality educational tools and programs, resulting in a more consistent system of educational preparation and support for grantmakers across the country.

Essential Skills and Strategies for New Grantmakers was developed by several organizations that believed the field would benefit from a standardized curriculum that would provide a common introduction to grantmaking. The volunteer leadership team that developed this curriculum included representatives from the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers (Forum), the Council on Foundations (Council), the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF), and Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania (GWP). Development of the ESS curriculum was supported by Council on Foundations grants from The Lumina Foundation for Education and the Ford Foundation.
